Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science, University of Jaffna is calling applications from qualified candidates for the following vacancies.
Project title: ‘DigSAL: Addressing the Digital Divide for South Asian Languages’
Project description:
The DigSAL project aims to train linguists, language undergraduates, graduates, and scholars in computing and language technologies. It also seeks to educate computer scientists in language, linguistics, and the complexities of South Asian languages. The project will develop systems for Sinhala, Tamil, and Urdu, focusing on Optical Character Recognition (OCR), speech recognition, Text-to-Speech systems (TTS), and text processing and understanding. Additionally, it aims to strengthen the capacity of universities to support high-resource IT infrastructure for Natural Language Processing (NLP) and establish collaborations between academia and industry to promote NLP advancements and infrastructure development in South Asia.
Job Descriptions:
1. Research Assistant (Temporary, Full-time) – 2 positions.
The Research Assistant will assist in all aspects of the project, including course module development, system development, and training.
Qualifications:
- Completed a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science or Information Technology from a UGC-Sri Lanka accredited university.
- Experience in document image processing (OCR) or speech recognition projects.
- Registered or willing to register for an MPhil program at the University of Jaffna.
- Willing to travel to partner universities in Germany, Pakistan, and Colombo/Sri Lanka for short and long-term assignments.
- Committed to a 24-month tenure with the project.
2. Research Assistant (Temporary) – 2 positions.
The Research Assistant will support all project activities, including module, annotation, and system development.
Qualifications:
- Completed a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science or Information Technology from a UGC-Sri Lanka accredited university.
- Strong Python programming skills.
- Committed to a 6-month tenure with the project.
3. Research Assistant (Temporary, Full-time) – 2 positions.
The Research Assistant will be involved in course module development, and language annotation, and will provide language and linguistic support to project-related activities.
Qualifications:
- Completed a BA (Hons) or BA in Linguistics or the Tamil language from a UGC-Sri Lanka accredited university.
- Proficient in English writing and speaking.
- A keen interest in learning and applying technology in language processing.
- Willing to travel within Sri Lanka, occasionally, for data collection.
- Committed to a 12-month tenure with the project.
