This course introduces learners to the essential concepts, tools, and practices involved in developing modern mobile applications. It focuses on building practical skills through structured, hands on activities that guide participants from fundamental programming concepts to the creation of fully functional mobile apps. Learners will explore mobile app architectures, user interface design, data handling, and the integration of common device features. By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, develop, test, and deploy simple mobile applications suitable for real world use.

Target Group

This course is suitable for school leavers, undergraduates, professionals, and technology enthusiasts who wish to begin building mobile applications for Android or cross platform environments.

Prerequisites

No prior experience is required. This course is suitable for complete beginners. Basic knowledge of JavaScript may be helpful.

Selection Process

Candidates will be selected through a short selection examination that evaluates reasoning skills, basic computing awareness, simple JavaScript knowledge, and general aptitude relevant to learning mobile app development concepts.

Course Highlights

Course Objective:

Provide learners with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to design, develop, and deploy simple mobile applications through guided, hands on learning.

Course Contents:

● Understand the mobile app ecosystem, development tools, and project structure

● Learn the fundamentals of mobile app programming, including variables, functions, and control structures

● Build user interfaces using layouts, components, and visual design principles

● Practise navigation, state management, and dynamic content creation

● Work with lists, user inputs, gestures, and interactive app behaviour

● Fetch and display data from APIs and manage basic error handling

● Integrate device features such as the camera, location, and sensors

● Gain introductory experience in deploying mobile applications on emulators and real devices

Awarding Certificate

To receive the Certificate in Mobile App Development participants must:

●       Maintain a minimum attendance of 80 percent
●       Obtain a minimum final mark of 40 percent

The final marks shall be determined through a combination of In-Course Assessments (50%) and the Final Examination (50%).

Certificate Categories:

●      Distinction for final marks of 75 percent or above
●      Merit for final marks from 55 percent to 74 percent
●      Pass for final marks from 40 percent to 54 percent

Participants who meet the attendance requirement but score below 40 percent will receive a Letter of Participation.
